Colorful Creation - Part 2

Thanks for your patience:) Here is part 2 of my colorful, monkey cake! Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of the actual decorating of the cake since, well, it was a messy nightmare! I decided to use fondant for the first time and made it myself. Wilton said making your own fondant was "moderately easy". Bull-crap. What a messy pain in the but that was! It turned out alright I guess but I'm not sure me & fondant will be BFFs.

So, here's the final product!

and here's the big, giant mess I made.

Last minute I decided to make up some cupcakes - the Angler came up with the Runtz topping idea, clever feller:)

aaaaannnnd....it was a huge hit! All the kiddos love seeing George and I was so pleased with how the middle came out when we cut on into it:)
 The Bird approved.

the cupcakes had a surprise middle too:)
Anyway, that's that! It was fun to create AND eat:)

Fit for a princess

Finished up the Bird's friend's gift for her princess party tomorrow. Been floundering around trying to decide what to do and here's what we came up with.

First up, dollar store headbands paired with dollar store felt flowers (both just 3 for $1.00) secured to the headbands with hot glue and a coordinating piece of felt. CUTE! I believe another trip to the dollar store is in order for a matching set for the Bird.
Next up, using the technique from here for making flower pillows I fixed up a little flower hair clip.

Lastly, using the Chan-Luu knock off wrap bracelet technique, I made this kiddie version:

Decided to attach the flower clip to a Garnet Hill lunch box and toss it all in - look ma, no gift wrap ;-)

When that was all set I whipped up a flower on a alligator clip for the Bird to wear to the big shebang tomorrow.

I'm thinking it will clip right onto a headband like so...

Fin!

Sock Head

If you are in the loop you may have heard about the new fad (new to me hearing about it anyway): Sock Curls.
It's a Pinterest thing my mom told me about where you use an old sock to make your hair all curly while you sleep. Like this:

Well, Bird has a LOT of hair so I thought she'd be a fine specimen to try this out on. We followed the directions from this video and her bun came out like so:

We put Strawberry's hair up in a sock bun too (at Bird's request)

And in the morning, it was time for the big reveal.....ready for it?

Nah, just kidding, that's Curly Sue. She tore the stupid sock out of her hair about 10 minutes after I put her to bed.
Hair fail.

A Colorful Creation...

Today I started work on a birthday cake for Bird's BFF/Arch Rival's 3rd birthday party. I decided to try something new (following instructions from Omnomicon) to give the birthday boy a little extra surprise when it's time to cut the cake.
I wanted to do yellow, red & blue but it came out more like pink. I think it looks beee-utiful, hopefully birthday boy will agree. For those too lazy to click the link above, it's just 2 boxes of cake mix, divided and colored with food coloring. Directions say to use white cake mix but all I had was yellow & it seems to have worked out anyway.
I poured a cup of each color into the cake pan, just dump it on top of the previous one...
this is what it looks like when it's baked:
put a thin crumb coat of frosting on it and into the freezer it goes...to be continued tomorrow night:)

runs in the family

The Bird was watching me work on some DIY Mini-Chan Luu style bracelets and decided she just HAD to make her own. Here she is, hard at work (love the headband)

and here, modeling her own handywork on the left hand and her Mini-Chan Luu (thanks Nana!) on the right.
If you haven't already learned how to make your own Chan Luu knock offs, best hurry over here to learn how!

Update: Bird wanted to do "more modeling" (I've created a monster!) Here are my favorite poses:
this one, awesome smile but blurry camera work:

and this one, cuz it shows off her jewels nicely:
and this one, cuz it looks so Bird-like:
then she wanted to take my picture, which is actually not the worst photo that has ever been taken of me.

Three Year Old's With Big Sticks?

Dear Blog,
A. Is it really a good idea for a bunch of three year old's to swing big sticks around at each other?
B. Pinatas are stupid.

So...I'm sure the three-year old princess will be just as pleased with some other gift...say, some princessey accessories to go with her princessey lifestyle?

C. According to my two-and-three-quarter year old, the plural of princess is princess-ees.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Here are my new ideas for the birthday girl:
headbands:

a few of these:
and/or perhaps a bracelet like so:

D. This new plan means I get to eat the candy that would have gone in the pinata....which is a good thing because I sort of already did.
